The Polymer-Aluminium-Electrolytic Capacitors by X-CON are available for up to 200V and can be supplied in radial leaded version and in SMD-version.
Instead of using a liquid electrolyte, the Polymer-Aluminium-Elektrolytic Capacitors by X-CON use a solid electrolyte made from a highly conductive solid Polymer. The features are:
Very low ESR-values of up to 5mOhm, also at very low temperatures.
The expected service-time is not limited by a liquid electrolyte which may evaporate over the time, as in the case of aluminium electrolytic capacitors.
The ripple-current carrying capability is up to 7A, thus being significantly higher than from aluminium electrolytic capacitors.
A very stable frequency-characteristic.
In contrast to Tantalum-Electrolytic Capacitors no voltage-derating is required and it can not burn.
In contrast to MLCC’s, Polymer-Al-Electroyltics are not mechanically sensitive and do not have a capacitance-drift depending on voltage and temperature. Vibrations due to the Piezo-Effect are not relevant.
For the application the relatively high leakage-current of Polymer-Al-Electrolytics has to be considered.
The expected service-life is calculated with the 20°C-rule for Polymer Capacitors. It implics that each reduction of the temperature by 20°C extend the expected service-life by the factor 10. With Polymer-Al-Electrolytics the much longer service-life than that of Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitors can be achieved, the more the ambient temperature is below the rated temperature.
For a filter-capacitor in a switch mode power-supply (frequencies 100 kHz and more), several pieces of high-capacitance aluminium electrolytc capacitors are connected parallelly because of the required low ESR. Here a 100µF Polymer-Al-Electrolytics can replace a 1000µF Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitor.
In applications with high ripple-currents or with high current peaks (e.g. GSM-Modem), a Polymer-Al-Electrolytic can be used in parallelly to one or to several Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitors.
Polymer-Al-Electrolytics can be also used as smoothing capacitors in DC-DC-converters, as well as for the suppression of disturbance voltages on the supply-line of compact electronic equipments.
For modern electronic devices in very compact design, Polymer-Al-Electrolytics are suitable as decoupling capacitors. In such devices there is not enough space to obtain the required low ESR of decoupling capacitors by parallelly connecting several pieces of Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitors. Here Polymer-Al-Electrolytics can demonstrate their benefit to buffer high transient current pulses. Furthermore, the voltage-drop in case of a load-change can be kept within the specified tolerance-limits.
The Polymer-Al-Electrolytics from X-CON can also be used as Bypass-, Buffer- and Decoupling Capacitors, e.g. in Automotive- and Telecom- applications.
Corresponding types of Polymer-Aluminium-Electrolytic Capacitors are e.g. offered by Panasonic with the OS-CON types.
